Runescape - Split Bark Armour Guide

Split Bark Armour Guide

(Members Runescape)

Thanks go to hurmo and soulprovider for writing this guide

The mage has always had a disadvantage in the defense from melee. Split Bark Armour is a special armour that gives you a defense bonus, as well as magic attack bonus. To make Split Bark Armour you need two things, Fine Silk, and Bark. These are only found in eastern Runescape otherwise known as Morytania.

Getting Silk

To start off go to the Varrock bank (and change to World 2), you will want to withdraw the following items:

  • 10-15k
  • 50+ noted Willow Logs *
  • 50+ of your favorite food (noted)
  • Tinder Box
  • You may also want to wear a Ring of Dueling in case you need to get out of there fast

* Maple logs can be used on the level 80 Shade and any Shade below that, however you can't use them on the level 100 or higher Shades. Maple pyre logs gives you 175 Firemaking experience for the pyre fire (same Prayer experience as with Willow), better items, and a slightly better chance to get Fine Silk, better chance to get keys to, meaning that with Willow Logs you would get maybe 6 or 7 keys out of every 10 level 80 Shades, with Maple Logs it 10 keys out every ten and 1-3 coin chances out of every 50. (When I hit level 50 Firemaking I tested this out I had about 119 pyre maple logs noted, and I lost a couple due to greedy people when I was down to 66 pyre maple logs I had 8 fine silks in my invetory and 47k coins when I only started out with 7k.)

Now head down to Mort’ton with your supplies (beware of the ghasts). You should have changed the store owner back to normal permanently so you are not constantly using the serum on him. To do this you must use the serum on the temples fire when your sanctity is 20% or higher, you will receive a small prize after doing this. After you have used the permanent serum on him buy:

  • Swamp Pastearound 100 Swamp Paste
  • Limestone Brick5-10 Limestone Bricks
  • Plank5-10 Planks
  • Olive OilOlive Oil

If you like you may buy a Flametuer Hammer. These hammers increase the amount of Crafting exp you get while you are reinforcing the temple. Here is the xp ratio between regular Hammer and Flametuer Hammer:

  • HammerHammer = 3-4 xp increase per second
  • HammerFlamtaer Hammer = 20 xp increase per second, + 4 after every 2 seconds

You can buy one from the store owner in Mort’ton for 13,000 gp. Now start reinforcing the temple, and use all of the Olive Oils on the fire in the middle just like you have done in the quest.

Now that you have your Sacred Oil, go sell 1 log to the store, then quickly buy it back. You have to be fast because there may be others trying to quickly take your logs from you because they are out. (Note: There are tips below for players that do not want to worry about others buying their items from the store. See Tips.) Use the Sacred Oil on the logs, this will make Pyre Logs. Go kill a Loar Shade (level 40), then take the remains to one of the alters just like the quest. Use the pyre logs on the alter, then the remains on the logs, and then light the logs. Hopefully a key will appear at the end of the alter, but sometimes only coins appear. If you get coins just redo the process of burning the remains.

You are now ready to enter the tomb of the shades, but first go to the general store and sell some of your food and buy it back the same way you did the logs. The tomb entrance is located along the waters edge to the north west of the general store. The doors are facing the north, and are indented in the ground so the first time finding it is a little tricky. If you end up on the dirt path to the north west you are too far west. Go through the doors and you are now in the first section of the tomb. You are only allowed to enter if you have a key of any color or kind, but you must have a key. Here you will probably be attacked by Phrin Shades (level 40). Go into one of the smaller doors of the tomb where there will be 5 chests each has a different color lock. Use your key with the corresponding chest. You will receive some small probably pretty worthless things.

You now need to kill some Phrin Shades (level 40) and keep their remains. Trips of 10 remains usually seem to work but you can do more if you would like. Now leave the tomb and go back to making your pyre logs. Go through the process of burning the shades remains. As you burn the shades remains you will receive Prayer exp, and Firemaking exp. the following table shows the amounts.

Type of Pyre Log Required Firemaking level Firemaking exp gained Prayer exp gained
Normal (Loar Shade) 5 50 33.5
Willow (Riyl Shade) 35 100 61.5
Yew (Asyn Shade) 65 225 79.5
Magic (Fyre Shade) 80 404.5 100

Now enter the tomb again you will have some steel keys from the Phrin Shades (level 40). Do not forget to take your food with you when you are reentering the tomb. This time keep going straight once you enter the tomb. Go south through a small hallway to the solid steel door, as long as you have some colored steel key you will be let through. While you are in this area you can once again go in one of the smaller rooms and match up your keys with your chests. You can now either kill some Riyl Shades, which will give you black keys after burning the remains, or continue with Phrin Shades. (If you want to continue with Phrin Shades you can use regular logs as your pyre logs.) I would suggest killing Riyl Shades because the black keys will give you a better chance of Fine Silk and other good prizes than the steel will. After you burn the Riyl Shade remains you will receive black keys. To get to the black chests you go straight through the steel door and south into a T intersection go east at this intersection into a large room. There will be Asys Shades (level 100) floating around. Now head west in the large room where you will find smaller rooms with the black chests. If your Firemaking level is high enough you can go to Asyn Shades which give silver keys, these keys give even more valuable items and you have an even better chance of getting Fine Silk from the silver chests. The silver chests are the opposite way on the T intersection of where you turn to get to the black chests. Continue doing process of burning remains, then opening the chests until you have 11 pieces of Fine Silk. Don’t worry if you are not getting any fine silk to begin it will take a while to get the silk. After you get the process down it will go much faster than your first couple trips.

You might need to go to the bank a few times so a Ring of Dueling is a good idea to teleport yourself to the Al Karid Dueling Arena, which is much faster than walking all the way back to Varrock.

Tips...

. . . For someone who doesn't want to fight people on world 2 for selling noted stuff to shop and buying it back: When you head to Mort'ton next in world 2 instead of taking your noted logs and food with you take off all of your armor when your in canfis deposit it into the bank. Take only the hammer of choice your swamp paste, 5k gp (its enough for what your going to need to do) and enough runes to teleport to Varrock or Canfis about 20 times (air staff is good for this), you won't need the tinderbox because someone else on world 2 has one already. Now if your weary about not having armor, take a couple of pieces of food not noted and your best weapon and shield. If you have the Boots of Lightness take them with you. Also if you have completed the In Search of Myreque Quest that makes your route quicker. What we are trying to aim at here is to make your weight as little as posible to allow you to run longer.

Take whatever route you prefer and head down to Mort'ton. When your in Mort'ton talk to the shop owner (which you should have used your permanent serum on) and buy the supplies needed to repair the temple. Go to the temple and dump enough supplies in to reach either 90% ot 100% then go back to the shop and fill your inventory up with Olive Oil, then combine the 3 dose Olive Oils together ot make 4 dose Olive Oils, do this until your inventory is full with Olive Oil(4).Then go back to the temple and begin rebuilding when your sanctity reaches 80% begin using your Olive Oils with the flame (if it goes out don't worry someone else will relight it). Now your inventory should be filled with sacred Oil. Teleport to the closest bank and deposit all of your oil into the bank then start the process again. Once you feel you have enough Sacred Oils head to your favorite tree cutting place and cut enough trees at your own leisure and when you go to deposit them into the bank combine them with your Sacred Oil. Now you'll have more vials for your herblore as well. And when you want to go "release" shades just switch to a different world where the place will be dead and sell the noted pyre logs and food to the shop and buy back without having to be quick, and without having to worry about losing your stuff.

  • regular logs take 2 doses
  • Willows and maples take 3 doses
  • I think yews and magics take all 4 doses

Note: your sanctity drops with every oil you use with the fire. Sanctity drops based on how much oil you purify

  • 1 dose = 1% sanctity drop
  • 2 dose = 2% sanctity drop
  • 3 dose = 3% sanctity drop
  • 4 dose = 4% sanctity drop

. . . General: Mort'ton can be a great place to make money just make like 10 of each pyre log and sell them for double of what regular logs cost. There is no lvl requirement for combining the oil with the log of choice so say you have lvl 75 Woodcutting and you can cut Magic Trees, but you have lvl 50 Firemaking, you can sell the magic pyre logs to somone who really needs them.

Getting Bark

Getting the Bark for your Split Bark Armor is the easy part. Just go west of Canifs into the haunted woods and find some Hallow Trees, you will need 11 pieces of Bark also. When you have all of your pieces of silk and bark take them to the wizard in the Wizards Tower on the 2nd floor. He will be dressed in full Split Bark Armour. He will charge you some money to make the armour for you.

Armour Pieces of Bark Pieces of Fine Silk Cost
Splitbark HelmSplitbark Helm 2 2 6,000gp
Splitbark BodySplitbark Body 4 4 37,000gp
Splitbark LegsSplitbark Legs 3 3 32,000gp
Splitbark GreavesSplitbark Greaves 1 1 1,000gp
Splitbark GauntletsSplitbark Gauntlets 1 1 1,000gp

Congratulations you now have some of the better magic armour in the game; however, it is not very effective against Range attacks. (See Armour (Snelm, Splitbark Armour, & Mystic Robes) for Splitbark Armour stats.)
