Kitten General Info

Before you can get your first kitten you must complete the Gertrude's Cat Quest. Once you have completed the quest you will get a kitten as part of the reward. Each kitten after that is bought from Gertrude for 100gp.

There are a few different colors of kittens. The color of the kitten you get is random, you do not get to choose.
KittenKitten

Once you have a kitten and are ready to raise it into a cat, right click on the kitten in your inventory and click drop. It will appear on the ground near you. Kittens only grow when they are out of your inventory and following you around. It takes about two to two and a half hours for a kitten to grow into a cat.

While your kitten is following you around, be careful when walking through doors, kittens can sometimes get stuck on the outside of them. They can also get stuck behind some objects, like rockslides, crates, etc...

Other players can see your kitten while it is following you around, but they can not interact with it.

Your kitten may sometimes disappear from the play screen and then reappear a bit later in your inventory. This is normal, unless you get a message telling you that it ran away.

Kittens can be placed in the bank when you are busy and do not have time to spend feeding and playing with it.

Raising kittens can be profitable. Once it grows into a cat you can take it to West Ardougne and trade it for 100 Death Runes.

When your kitten has grown into a cat you will get a message telling you this. It will look different on the play screen and in your inventory.
CatCat
You will no longer have to feed it, but you will have to make it chase Rats (level 1) to feed itself.

Other ways to interact with your kitten are:

Kittens like to play with a ball of wool. To give your kitten a ball of wool to play with, click on the ball of wool and then the kitten. You can use the same ball of wool over and over again.

Cat Training Medal

Cat Training Medal

If you catch 100 Rats (level 1) with a kitten you will get a Cat Training Medal. You have to catch all 100 with the same kitten, splitting it between 2 or more kittens does not work.

This can take a really really long time (I did it over 3 days, taking breaks in between). You may have to try quite a few times just to get one rat. It took me 25 tries for 1 rat once, other times it would be within the first few tries, it seems to vary. It does not seem to get faster the more your kitten catches.

Sometimes you can kind of 'pin' the rat in a corner or against an other object, this way the kitten can chase the same rat over and over again until it catches it. The kitten will chase the rat closest to it, but others will stay in the area if they are in a corner.

Catching Rats

If you stand too close to the rats they will attack you, try to keep about 2 'spaces' between you and the rat. It seems better to turn auto-retaliate off. If the rat attacks you and you have auto-retaliate on you will kill the rat before the kitten has a chance to catch it, they only have 2 hitpoints.

You still have to feed your kitten as usual while it is chasing rats.

It is probably best to keep track of the number of rats you catch, make a note of it somewhere, it does not tell you when you get to 100. Once your kitten catches 100 rats, go back and talk to Gertrude, she will give you the medal. You can wear the medal, but it does not add to any stats. When you examine the medal it says: For feline training expertise.

A couple good places to get rats are south of Lumbridge castle (inside the wall surrounding the castle), west of Lumbridge castle (on the outside of the wall surrounding the castle), the sewer of Varrock, and West Ardougne. I'm sure there are lots more places...
