Magic Info
Magic is the skill used to cast spells. To raise your magic level, you have to cast your spells. Each time you cast a spell, you gain experience points. At higher magic levels your spells will cause more damage and will fail less. Not all magic spells cause damage; some are useful for other things, such as Telekinetic Grab and Super Heat. The magic spells are listed under the black book on the main menu. The spells are color coded. A spell listed in black means that you do not have a high enough level to cast it yet or that you do not have the right runes in your inventory. Spells shown in colour or lit up means that you have the required magic level and the runes needed. When you hover the pointer over a spell, in the bottom of the magic window it tells you what kind of runes and how many of each are needed for the spell, and how many of that rune you have. See Magic Table for a list of the spells, required levels, spell descriptions, runes needed.
You will need to collect the runes for a spell before it can be cast. Some enemies drop runes or they can be purchased at magic shops and sometimes general stores. Some runes are rare and cannot usually be bought at the stores; some of the tougher enemies drop these runes. You can also craft the runes yourself, see Runecrafting. The runes are:
| Common: |
|
 |
Earth |
 |
Air |
 |
Water |
 |
Fire |
 |
Body |
 |
Mind |
| Rare: |
|
 |

 |

Members Runescape has combined runes. These each one of these runes take the place of the two runes they are made from. (See Runecrafting) Below is a list of the combined runes and the runes they take the place of.
| Combined Runes: |
|
 |
Mist (Air and Water) |
 |
Dust (Air and Earth) |
 |
Mud (Earth and Water) |
 |
Smoke (Air and Fire) |
 |
Steam (Water and Fire) |
 |
Lava (Earth and Fire) |
Some runes can be replaced with a staff of that type. For example, an air staff can fill the need of gathering air runes. The runes that can be replaced with a staff are air, earth, fire and water. The staffs can be purchased in a staff shop (there is one in Varrock next to the west bank) or some enemies drop them. To use a staff in place of runes, equip the staff in your inventory before casting the spell. The staff then becomes your weapon. In Members Runescape you can make battle staffs. Battle staffs replace runes and have better weapon stats. A battle staff can be enchanted for even better stats then a normal battle staff, this costs 40,000 gold. Take the staff to Thormac the sorceror, he is in a tower south of the Seer's Village. (Note: You must complete the Scorpion Catcher Quest before you can get a battle staff enchanted.)
To use a spell, open your magic list, click on the spell and then click on the enemy or item you want to cast the spell on. When casting a teleport spell, click on the spell, you will automatically be teleported. Sometimes a spell will fail. If this happens, you still gain experience and the runes are still used. Casting a spell on an enemy causes them to charge toward you and engage in battle. Once the enemy reaches you, hand-to-hand combat begins and your character will use the equipped weapon. It is possible to cast spells while in battle. Just open your spell list and cast as usual.
There are items that you can wear to give a magic bonus. Wearing a blue wizards hat will give you a +4 and wearing a blue wizards robe gives you a +6. The down side to wearing a robe is that it is worn instead of chest armour, not with. Some amulets can also change these points. (See Amulets)

Attaching Spells To Staffs
Some spells can be attached to staffs. When a spell is attached to a staff, it is automatically cast without having to click the spell icon and the enemy each time. The spell becomes your attack instead of 'swinging' the staff like you normally would. The spells that can be attached are:
- Wind Strike
- Water Strike
- Earth Strike
- Fire Strike
- Wind Bolt
- Water Bolt
- Earth Bolt
- Fire Bolt
- Wind Blast
- Water Blast
- Earth Blast
- Fire Blast
- Wind Wave
- Water Wave
- Earth Wave
- Fire Wave
To attach a spell, click on the crossed swords icon, and click 'Choose Spell' in the lower right. A page will open showing the spells that can be used. Click on the spell you want to use. It will go back to the Combat Style page. Then click 'Attack with (will show chosen spell)'. When you run out of runes for the spell, the staff will be used as a normal weapon.

Charging Orbs
(Members Runescape)
Orbs must be charged before they can be added to Battlestaffs. For this you will need an Unpowered Orb and the Runes needed to cast the spell for the kind of Orb you want to make. To charge an orb, go to the Obelisk location and cast the spell matching it (Charge Water Orb on the Water Obelisk, Charge Air Orb on the Air Obelisk, etc...). You need to do this for each orb you want to charge.
Once the Orbs are charged they can be attached to Battlestaffs. (See Crafting - Glass, Battlestaffs, Shells & Snelms)
