Runescape - Runecraft Skill Guide

Runecraft

NOTE: Before you can use Runecraft, you must first complete the Rune Mysteries Quest

Runecraft is the skill used to make runes. This skill can help boost your Magic level since it can sometimes be difficult to gather the amount of runes you need to level up.

Mining Rune Essence

There are 2 different kinds of essence:
Rune EssenceRune Essence (used for Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Mind, and Body Runes)
Pure Rune EssencePure Rune Essence (used for any runes including combined runes)

The servers you play on and your Mining level will decide which kind of essence you get when you mine.

  • If you mine on the Free Servers you will always get normal Rune Essence.
  • If you mine on the Members Servers and have lower then level 30 Mining you will get normal Rune Essence. If you Mining is over level 30 you will get Pure Rune Essence.
Items needed:
Adamantite PickaxePickaxe (Adamantite Pickaxe shown)

To use Runecraft, you must first mine essence. You will need a pick. Then find an NPC (Non Player Character) that can teleport you. There are a few different NPCs that can do this. They are:

  • Sedridor - the Head Wizard in the basement of the Wizards' Tower (met during the Rune Mysteries Quest)
  • Aubury - runs the rune shop south of the eastern bank in Varrock (met during the Rune Mysteries Quest)
  • Wizard Cromperty - in the building with a blue floor, north of Ardougne's eastern entrance
  • Brimstail - in the Tree Gnome Stronghold. Go into the Tree Gnome Stronghold, turn west after you go through the entrance gate. Follow the fence west. Near where the fence meets the water, you will see a 'Hollowed Rock', enter it. Follow the cavern, you will see Brimstail.
  • Wizard Distentor - on the main floor of the Magic Guild (NOTE: Level 66 Magic required to enter the guild)

Talk to the NPC and ask to be taken to the Rune Essence or you can right click on them and then click 'Teleport'. You will then be teleported to the Rune Essence. (NOTE: You may need to look around a bit, sometime you are teleported to the center of the area between the Rune Essences.)

Tiaras

A Tiara can be used in place of a Talisman. A Talisman is recommended until you know where the Temple is since a Tiara does not give directions to it. Tiaras are crafted from silver. (See Crafting)

Before a Tiara can be used instead of a Talisman, it must be bound to that kind of Talisman. Once a Tiara has been bound to a Talisman, the name of the Talisman will be shown before it, such as Nature Tiara. Tiaras, except for Law, are tradable. You can buy them from other players instead of binding them yourself. To bind a Tiara with a Talisman, you must take it and the Tailsman to the temple (same kind as the Talisman). Use the alter as you normally would. The Tiara and Talisman will be bound together. You will loose the talisman since it becomes part of the Tiara.

While wearing the Tiara, you can click the entrance to the Temple (of the same type as the Tiara) to enter , instead of using the Tiara with the entrance like with a Talisman. This is a time saver over the Talismans and also frees up an inventory space since they can be worn.

Rune EssenceRune Essence

To make runes, you will need a talisman and Rune Essence or Pure Rune Esssence (depending on the kind of runes being made). First you must use the talisman to find the Mysterious Ruin location. To use the Talisman, right click on it and then click Locate. You will get a message giving directions to the Mysterious Ruin location. You may need to do this several times. Once you find the Mysterious Ruins, use the talisman with the Ruins. You will be teleported to the Temple for that kind of runes. Once there, look around for an altar. Right click on the altar and click Craft. When you are ready to leave the temple, click on the Portal. You will be teleported back to the Mysterious Ruins.

Combining Runes

(Members Runescape)

Members can combine runes. This way you carry one rune instead of two, saving inventory space.

To combine runes you will need Pure Rune Essence (normal will not work), talismans (1 to get to the alter and one to combine the runes), and runes (matching the talisman to combine the runes). The kind of talismans and runes will vary depending on which combined runes you are making (see the table below). Tiaras can not be used to combine runes. For example, to make 10 Smoke Runes you will need:

If you go to the Air Altar:
Air Talisman (to get to the alter)
Fire Talisman (used with the Air Alter to combine the runes, you will loose this talisman)
10 Fire Runes
10 Pure Essence
If you go to the Fire Altar:
Fire Talisman (to get to the alter)
Air Talisman (used with the Fire Alter to to combine the runes, you will loose this talisman)
10 Air Runes
10 Pure Essence

Take the Pure Essence, talismans, and runes to the desired altar and use the talisman matching the runes you brought with the altar, this talisman will be lost/destroyed.

You have a 50/50 chance of combining the runes successfully. The success rate the same at any level, it does not increase as your Runecrafting level goes up. Wearing the Necklace of Binding will give you a 100% success rate for 15 trips to a temple. The necklace will be destroyed once it is worn out, like the Amulet of Forging, Ring of Dueling, etc... (See Amulets, Rings, & Necklaces)

Levels for extra Runes
