Runescape - Shades of Mort'ton Guide

Shades of Mort'ton Guide

(This is a Members Runescape feature)

Thanks go to DarkChrono for writing this guide

You must complete the Shades of Mort'ton Quest.

Part 1: The One key to all
Part 2: Getting your phat lewts
Part II of Part 2: Getting your phat lewts

Part 1: The One key to all

I just learned that you only need the stupid Silver Key to open all the doors. Before I had every single color key in my inventory...aauugghh. But here is where you get the Silver Key.

You must bring a decent set of gear. As for the shades do hit quite a bit.

  1. Bring the follow items for this first set.
    a Tinderbox
    Noted Magic Logs
    10000 Gold Pieces
    (Optional): a Hammer
    Food (bring however many)
  2. Now you must travel to Mort'ton through that stupid swamp. The best way to preserve food is to note all of it and end up selling and rebuying it at the general store. It's risky but it's an excellent idea.

  3. Now you're at the general store, you need to create (4) Olive Oil doses. However many logs you have the same ratio of (4) Olive Oil dose. Also if sell the logs and rebuy them leave at least 1 space open.

  4. You must now make the Olive Oil into Sacred Oil. To do that you can either buy the sludge thingy and planks or w/e and build the temple, or kill shades themselves. But before you can make the oils sacred, you must have a sanctity of at least 10% and the temple fully built. So you hop on a well populated server and either help build the temple or kill shades. I recommend kill shades if you have a high combat level because you can gain it really fast. But if you want to level Crafting build the temple. Once you have at least 10% sanctity, use the oil on the flame in the middle of the temple. That creates a (4) Sacred Oil. Keep doing that until all of your Olive Oil is Sacred Oil.

  5. Use the Oil on the logs to created Pyre Magic Logs.

  6. Enter the tomb like area and kill a Phrin Shade and take its remains. Go to one of the funeral beds somewhere, and place the Pyre log AND the remains onto it. After it is placed use the Tinderbox on it. Then a Steel Key should pop out. (If money comes up kill another and burn.) Take it and enter the little tomb like area again.

  7. Inside, go through the steel door and kill a Riyl Shade and take its remains. Go outside and do the same thing you did earlier. Take the Black Key.

  8. Go back inside, open the steel and the black door. Inside kill the Asyn Shade and take its remains. Go out, rinse and repeat. A Silver Key should come out. Take it.

Congradulations, you now have the key that will open all the doors. You can go inside and use all of your keys EXCEPT your silver one. That one key will be important for future runs.

Excellent point. If you have extra logs and such, grab a couple more Silver Keys and keep one or a few in the bank.

I sound done right? Of course not!

Now that you have your Silver Key, you have 26 slots open now (1 for key, 1 for box). Now there are several ways to continue on from here. You can either mass produce (4) Sacred Oils or go one by one. I strongly suggest you mass produce them. Although it's tedious it becomes VERY relaxing later on. 2 Ways of mass producing:

Killing Shades
Bring the best gear you have. Anything that gives the most defense and your best weapon that can kill things one by one without a continuously needing to use a special (like Dragon Scimmy). Bring around 10000 GP, Desert Treasure Magic, and Runes for Canifis Teleport (66 Magic minimum). Go to Mort'ton and build up as many (4) Olive Oils. Kill and keep turning the Olive into Sacred. Once you've reached the max teleport to Canifis, heal up, and repeat.
Building
Bring just your hammer, Canifis Teleport and 100000 GP. Now buy as much tar as you want and as many (4) Olive Oils. Keep building the temple and occasionally turn your Olive Oil into Sacred Oil when you can. After all that teleport and repeat.

Keep doing this until you're satisfied. Once that's all done turn all the Magic Logs and the Sacred Oil into Pyre logs.

Part 2: Getting your phat lewts

Several ways of doing this.

You can either bring X amount of Pyre Magic Logs, a Tinderbox, and X amount of food/prayer pots. But don't forget your Silver Key. I suggest you bring 10 Logs and 3 Prayer Protection potions. Why? You'll see in a bit. Your inventory should contain 0 GP, an Amulet of Glory (so you can teleport to a nearby Alter to recharge Prayer), X Logs, X Inventory Slots free, and Y Prayer potions. So it should be like this (In my eyes):

1 Tinderbox
1 Silver Key
11 Pyre Magic Logs
3 Prayer Potions
12 open inventory spaces

Now go down, kill the X amount of shades (equal to your logs) and go outside and burn them all. Reason why I say Prayer Protection potion is so that you won't waste food. But if you want you can take out the Prayer Potions if you have a high combat level and have an excess amount of food AND Canifis Teleport runes. So it can be like:

1 Tinderbox
1 Silver Key
12 Pyre Logs
12 Lobsters
2 Law Runes
1 Blood Runes

Everytime you kill a Fiyr Shade, eat a lobster and take the remains. Get 12 remains and burn them all and take whatever pops out. Use the keys on the chests and enjoy your loots. REMEMBER TO LEAVE ATLEAST ONE SILVER KEY FOR CONTINUOUS RUNS.

Part II of Part 2: Getting your phat lewts

Here is the riskiest and most unpredictable way. I did this on and off to see the rates, and it's truely unpredicatble. It's all dependant on what you get from the chests and such. Here's what should be in your inventory:

200000 GP
Canifis Teleport Runes
Noted Pyre Magic Logs
Noted Food
Tinderbox
Nature Runes
Fire Staff
Silver Key

You have around 20 spots open. Now heres what you do:
Run down to Mort'ton and turn 10 of the food and logs into tangible things. Go kill and burn and get your keys. Now open all the chests. Don't look and see what you've gotten until you've opened 10 chests. REMEMBER TO LEAVE ATLEAST ONE SILVER KEY FOR CONTINUOUS RUNS AND FUTURE. Quickly run outside (as a Fiyr Shade should be attacking you as you're opening) and take a look at what you've got.

It's time to decide.

Choose what to keep and what to Alchemy. If you know you can't sell something for more than its alchemy price, Alch it. But if you have something that's worth more you should keep it. Now once you're done, look at how many open slots you have. You decide if you want to teleport and free up your maximum slots or continue unnoting your food and logs.

This is my guide for shade in assumance you know what to do, done the quest to do this, have Desert Magic, and have 66 Magic atleast. For emphasis...

REMEMBER TO LEAVE ATLEAST ONE SILVER KEY FOR CONTINUOUS RUNS
