I'm level 66 mage, which i've mainly obtained by high-alching and teling around, but i've never used magic for combat. Last time i remember using mage was when i was using fire strike to get to high-alch... some 3 years ago.
Anyhoot, the magic skill has changed immensly since i last made an attempt to level it up. I mean they've added Ancients and Lunar...so i've a lot to learn.
I've currently got about 10k yew longs to high alch so that will give me some xp, but thats long term (as i dont plan on spending 4 days of straight high alching).
Sooo...basically my question for you smarter people is how should i level my mage combat-based. Runes, armour and money are not a problem, however i do not know what spells to use or what armor to wear. I'm sure i'll have to complete Ancient magic quest soon as well, but what should i start blowing up to get some good xp?

crumble undead is what i hear to train magic most. mystic and a farseer helm with a mystic elemental staff is what i use. i have also seen people cursing ducks at the fishing guild with a mud staff so they only use nats. but that gives no hp exp. i can do more research to see basic combat spells exp for you if you wish.
crumbles are a waste unless you did them back when before they lowered the xp.
i personally use firestrikes because its cheap, but it takes too long IMO. If I were you I would use firebolts/blasts on iron or steel drags, which ever you prefer, but dont forget anti-fire pots, anti-d shield and food. and go to the brimhaven duengon with ax and 875 gp

1. Crumble undead was good way back when, before they screwed the exp you got. Now, it's not really worth it for the money to pay. Fire strike is probably the better bet, since it can be attached.
2. Mud staff + bodies/souls. Nats are for conversion spells, not curse. :P
What a lot of people are doing is buying a mud staff and taking about 10k bodies and just cursing the * outta things. If you can, get the lowest mage bonus (many use rune armour) and a staff, then head to a dragon pit where you can sit and curse. Drags have a high mage def, and you'll have a low mage att. Easy splash.
If you want to fight, can always do the old fashioned mage arena. Or, if you want to try some more "difficult" magic places, can go to the mage arena north of the duel arena. Bones -> Peaches can come in handy. ;) Atleast worth a try, if you haven't yet.
One way to get some exp and cash, do elemental battlestaffs. Now, with the grapple, you can do water orbs and just cross over to catherby when you're done.

I've been doing some mage fighting lately...I highly recommend get to lvl 70 mage and get ancients then go to pest control casting ice burst. If you get on a fast world it should be easy to get the 50 points required or if your on a slow pc world find a big pile of monster and cast away...
I attached the pic of the most damage I have done...it was using ice burst.

Fire bolt gives more experience than crumble undead now.
I second Rwelch's recommendation, pest control is great for mage. :)
Third for Rwelch's........And use the points you get on it for mage as well. You will get some kick * exp if you do it that style. Awesome hp/exp as well.
Other than that.....Buy some 5k laws or so, and then telegrab the crap out of zammorak wines. lol.....might take a while, but you'll get your money back, or, just telegrab about 1.5-2k of them, and then Cammy tele the rest. Make your money back as well.
Other than this, just no-life alch. =]

@Gimli the number next to the sword is points and points basically equal* health points taken meaning rwelch got about 20k mage exp from that round not counting point or what he got after that pic.
I mainly train in the mage training arena may be slow but you can put the points toward useful mage items mind you they don't come cheap at all but you can learn a new spell or even put the points back into more runes at a 10 runes used to one bought roughly.
