The Mini-Quest (members only).
Required: nothing.
Length: Short, very short with the appropriate teleport runes (see below).
Recommended: runes to teleport to falador, ardougne, and back to varrock.
Where to start: talk to the Mage of Zamorak just north of Edgeville, lvl-9 wilderness. He also runs a magic shop where he stocks the basic runes like Aubury has at his shop in Varrock. After you finish the quest, he has larger supplies of all the runes, and he also sells blood runes.

When you speak to him, he'll tell you to meet him at the Zamorak Temple in Varrock. This is NOT the stone circle south of Varrock where the dark wizards are. Just southeast of Aubury's Rune Shop you'll see an altar icon on your worldmap, that's where you want to go.

Once you get to the Zamorak Temple, speak to the mage again and ask him how he gets his runes. He'll be surprised when you tell him about runecrafting, and a little concerned. He says the forces of Saradomin and those of Zamorak have been evenly balanced up until now, but now the wizards who follow Saradomin have unlimited access to runes while followers of Zamorak do not. He asks for your help in gaining access to the rune essence mines to regain balance between the opposing forces. To do the mini-quest, say you'll help.

He'll give you a scrying orb, and instructions to teleport to the rune essence from three different locations so he can triangulate the location of the rune essence mines. You're choices are as follows:
Aubury, who runs the Rune Shop in Varrock.
The Wizard Sedridor, in the basement of the Wizard's Tower south of Draynor.
The Wizard Cromperty, in his home in the northeast corner of Ardougne.
The Wizard Brimstall, a gnome hiding in a cave in the Gnome Stronghold.
The Wizard Frumscone, in the Magic Guild (lvl-66 magic required to enter the Magic Guild).
Since you're right nearby, teleport with Aubury first. From there choose two more locations. I teleported to Falador and paid Sedridor a visit, and then to Ardougne where I talked to Cromperty. Whichever ones you choose, the time you teleport to the rune essence from the third location carrying the scrying orb, it will glow. Now teleport back to Varrock and talk to the zamorak mage. He will thank you can give you your reward.

Reward: 1,000 runecrafting experience, research the Mage of Zamorak has compiled on the abyss (see below), and a small pouch (see below).

The Pouches.
The new pouches can be used to carry rune essence in larger quantities. There are four different sized pouches. The small pouch can carry three rune essence and requires lvl-1 runecrafting to use. The medium pouch can carry six rune essence and requires lvl-25 runecrafting to use. The large pouch can carry nine rune essence and requires lvl-50 runecrafting to use. The giant pouch can carry twelve rune essence and requires lvl-75 runecrafting to use. The pouches are untradable and you can only have one of each in your possession. So far they are only dropped by the creatures in the Abyss. After a certain number of uses the pouches will begin to decay and won't carry their full quota of essence. Talk to the mage in the middle of the Abyss and he can fix the pouches for you.

The Abyss.
When you complete the mini-quest, the Mage of Zamorak will give you a book of collected research he has done on the Abyss. He will also teleport you to the Abyss from where you first met him north of Edgeville after you talk to him about it in Varrock. In the Abyss, you can fight Abyssmal Leeches (lvl-41 with 10hp and drops small pouches), Abyssmal Guardians (lvl-59 with 50hp and who get two attacks at a time, or a ranged attack, and who drops small and medium pouches), and Abyssmal Walkers (lvl-81 with 96hp and who drops all the different sizes of pouches). Other drops include the new Elemental Talisman, which can be used to access any of the four Elemental Rune Altars and can be used to make any of the combo runes. They also drop all the talismans except law, rune essence or notes of rune essence in quantities of 1, 5, or 15, and binding necklaces. The Abyss is all multi-combat, and also when you enter it your prayer is dropped to zero and you're automatically skulled (evidently one of Zamorak's quirks according to the mage). If you take a prayer potion to recharge, your prayer doesn't drain constantly. It will just drop to zero prayer when you first enter the Abyss.

When you first enter the Abyss, you are in the outer ring. You can get to the inner ring by overcoming different obstacles, each kind requires a different approach. Note each time you overcome an obstacle you gain 25xp to the skill you used.
Passage: An unblocked way to enter the inner ring of the Abyss.
Boils: You can attempt to destroy this blockage using a tinder box and the firemaking skill.
Eyes: You can attempt to distract the eyes using the thieving skill.
Gap: You can attempt to squeeze through this opening using the agility skill.
Rocks: You can attempt to mine through this blockage using a pickaxe and the mining skill.
Tendrils: You can attempt to cut through this blockage using an axe and the woodcutting skill.
From the inner ring you can enter rifts which teleport you directly to the corresponding runecrafting altar. There are portals to death, blood, and soul altars, however you can't use them yet since those altars haven't been released.

There are several ways out of the Abyss. You can teleport out, obviously; you can gain entrance to the inner ring of the Abyss and get out by using one of the rifts to one of the Runecrafting Altars, or you could use a pickaxe with the blockage infront of the entrance to the Abyss to get out.

Recently pkers have proven to be a problem when you're attempting to enter the Abyss, they are often high level players with combat levels in the 80s, 90s, and 100s, most seem to be mages using Ancient Magics. You can usually go around them by going up the east side of the stream that flows down on the eastern side of the Edgeville bank until you reach the end at lvl-5 wilderness, staying back a ways so pkers on the western shoreline can't see you on their mini-map. Then run over and have the Mage of Zamorak teleport you to the Abyss before the pkers even know you're there.

The Mage of Zamorak's Rune Store.
Before starting the quest you can buy runes in small amounts from the Mage of Zamorak from him north of Edgeville. After the quest, his prices drop considerably and you can buy more types of runes from him. Before you complete the quest, the store is as follows:

Max of 100 earth runes in stock, 5gp each.
Max of 100 water runes in stock, 5gp each.

Max of 100 body runes in stock, 3gp each.
Max of 50 chaos runes in stock, 117gp each.

After the quest is completed, the store is as follows:Max of 1,000 air runes in stock, 5gp each.
Max of 1,000 earth runes in stock, 5gp each.
Max of 1,000 water runes in stock, 5gp each.
Max of 1,000 fire runes in stock, 5gp each.

Hmm... nifty. Good work on that.

The pouches will prove an invaluable boost to runecrafting, now even lvl-1 runecrafters can make three times the runes per trip. if I can get a full stock of medium pouches, I can make around 162 chaos runes a trip instead of just 28.

Zephyr

You sure it works like that? Maybe its 1 pouch per trip.

Wayne

I guess we'll find out.

Yea, im pretty sure Jagex wouldnt make it THAT easy. Maybe another 21 essence at best. (All of the sacks)

From what I can tell, it's not to easy to get the pouches in the first place. They might prove to be rare and expensive, which will limit the supply as well.

Oops... all pouches come out to 30, forgot about large pouch.

But yea, if theyre rare, good luck getting a full inventory of em.

good job with the mini-quest guide Eregion2

Thanks Borgis. =]

Also a note. When you enter the Abyss you're not visually skulled, and you aren't when you leave either. I've heard that if you die inside the Abyss though, you loose everything.

Also, there are several places where you can squeeze into holes in the wall, but I don't know where they go. There is also several rocks you can mine, but I don't know what happens if you do.

Added pic of me surrounded by Abyssmal Guardians and Walkers.

Whats the combat lvl on those?

Wayne
06-15-2005, 07:59 PM
The Abyss is entirely multi-combat, so you get swarmed by these folks.

The Abyssmal Leech is lvl-41 with 10hp.
The Abyssmal Guardian is lvl-59 with 50hp and gets two attacks at once.
The Abyssmal Walker is lvl-81 with 96hp.

Also, there are portals in the Abyss that take you directly to the runecrafting altar of your choice. In the instance of the chaos altar, you bypass the maze entirely. It is now insanely easy to get to any runecrafting altar in existance, you don't even need a talisman or tiara to get in.

All this information has been added to the guide.

Sounds like decent combat exp, heh.

Any decent drops?

Wayne

All of them drop ashes, rune essence (sometimes notes in quantities of 1,5, or 15), all talismans except laws (including the new elemental talisman), binding necklaces, and rune essence pouches (looks like their decently rare, I killed many guardians and quite a few walkers and I haven't gotten one yet).

does the pouch you get change by what you kill (small for leeches, medium for guardians, lage and giant for walkers)?
any ideas how much the bags are worth?

Wayne

I don't know since I haven't gotten any yet and I haven't talked to anyone who has gotten one either.

Sounds like decent combat exp, heh.

Exp is horrible here. You only get as much exp by the amount of damage you've done. Like if I were to hit a 20, I would only get 20 exp rather then a regular 80.

Bag drops are semi-rare. Just kill the level 81's and you'll get them in one day. Bags are untradeable and you can have only one of each.

It's confirmed then. To bad, they would have been a nice item to get/resell.
