If you catch 100 rats (level 1) with a kitten you will get a Cat Training Medal. You have to catch all 100 with the same kitten, spliting it between 2 or more kittens does not work.
This can take a really really long time (I did it over 3 days, taking breaks in between). You may have to try quite a few times just to get one rat. It took me 25 tries for 1 rat once other times it would be within the first few tries, it seems to vary. It does not seem to get faster the more your kitten catches.
Sometimes you can kind of 'pin' the rat in a corner or against an other object, this way the kitten can chase the same rat over and over again until it catches it. The kitten will chase the rat closest to it, but others will stay in the area if they are in a corner (see pic). If you stand too close to the rats they will attack you, try to keep 2 spaces between you and the rat. It seems better to turn auto-retaliate off. If the rat attacks you and you have auto-retaliate on you will kill the rat before the kitten has a chance to catch it, they only have 2 hitpoints.
You still have to feed your kitten while it is chasing rats.
It is probably best to keep track of the number of rats you catch, make a note of it somewhere, it does not tell you when you get to 100. Once your kitten catches 100 rats, go back and talk to Gertrude, she will give you the medal.
You can wear the medal, but it does not add to any stats. When you examine the medal it says: For feline training expertise. I'm not sure if it does anything special yet or not. I do know that after you get the medal you still have to pay to get more kittens.
A couple good places to get rats are south of Lumbridge castle (inside the wall surrounding the castle), west of Lumbridge castle (on the outside of the wall surrounding the castle), the sewer of Varrock, and West Ardougne. I'm sure there are lots more places...
