Between a Rock... Quest Guide


Hidden away from the fearsome trolls and the roaming Fremennik, the dwarves delve deep beneath the mountains in search for the ore they need to support their home of Keldagrim. One dwarf in particular, however, has for years been trying to crack open a rock that seems to be impervious to any material that he's tried on it.

Convinced that solving the riddle of the rock will lead him to unimaginable wealth, he has spent the latter part of his life on just this lump of stone. Help him out, but take care you don't end up in a tight spot!

Start point:
The Keldagrim mines east of Rellekka and north of the mountain camp
To start:
Speak to Dondakan, standing by his cannon in the northwest of the mines
Quest difficulty/length:
Experienced/Medium
Minimum requirements:
  • Must have completed Fishing Contest Quest
  • Must have completed Dwarf Cannon Quest
  • Level 30 Defence
  • Level 40 Mining (higher mining being an advantage)
  • Level 50 smithing
  • Be able to defeat at least a level 75 enemy

Pickaxe
Weapon
Armour
runes to teleport to Falador twice or a Amulet of Glory to go to Edgville if desired (time saver)

  1. Head towards the mine east of Rellekka, north of the Swaying Tree.

    If you have completed the Fremennik Trials Quest you can use the Enchanted Lyre to teleport most of the way. Just remember to bring a raw shark to recharge the Lyre when needed.

  2. North and a bit east of the mine you will see a Tunnel leading into the mountain, go inside. There are Mountain Trolls (level 69) in the area. Look east, almost straight across from the Tunnel you just entered through. You will see a Cave entrance, go through it.

  3. Talk to the Dwarven Ferryman. Pay the 2gp and cross the river.

  4. Go north then cross the bridge to the east. Next go north then west and cross the bridge to the west. (You can look for the Quest Start Symbol.) You will get to an area with a Dwarf MultiCannon. Talk to Dondakan the Dwarf. Ask who he is. Tell him it's a bit noisy in here. Then ask why he's firing a cannon at the wall. Ask why he's trying to get through the rock. Tell him that it sounds interesting. Ask what's inside. He will ask you to find out more information on the rock.

  5. Go back across the bridge, then go south. You will see a Dwarven Ferryman, talk to him. Pay the 2gp and cross.

  6. Look around for the Dwarven Engineer, talk to him. Ask if he knows anything about the rock. He will tell you to talk to Rolad, currently with the Black Guard at Ice Mountain. Head west to leave the area or teleport out if you can.

  7. Head to the Dwarven Mine northern entrance (south of Ice Mountain). Talk to Rolad. He will try to give you some pages from a book then discover that he has lost them. He will tell you to look for the pages in the Dwarven Mine.

  8. Look around the area for Nulodion. Buy a Ammo Mould from him (5gp).
    ( Done)

  9. Go into the Dwarven Mine. Now you have to find the pages. (NOTE: The order you find them in does not matter.)
    • Search the mine carts until you find Book page 2
    • Kill some Scorpions (level 14) until you find Book page 1
    • Mine some ore until you find Book page 3 (I got it while mining copper.)
    Once you find all three pages, they will stack and take up one space.

  10. Leave the Mine and talk to Rolad again. Tell him that you will bring it back. He will give you the Dwarven Lore book. Read it.

  11. Go and talk to Dondakan the Dwarf again (in the cave east of Rellekka). Ask what he has tried so far. Ask what else he tried. Tell him that you will be back later.

  12. Go across the bridge, turn south. Talk to the Dwarven Ferryman, pay 2gp and cross. Go west and then leave the cave. Enter the Tunnel. Head south and west to the entrance to Rellekka. Go to the furnace in the western part of the town. Use a gold bar with the furnace, make a cannonball.

  13. Go back to Dondakan the Dwarf. Use the gold Cannon Ball with him, tell him to fire it. It will work. He will tell you that he wants to shoot you through the rock. He also tell you that he needs to modify his cannon and that you will need a golden helmet. Ask if he want's to fire you into the rock. Agree to do it (tell him to shoot you in). He will give you part of the schematics and tell you to look for the rest. He will also tell you to get a golden helm.

  14. Go west then south, talk to the Dwarven Ferryman. Pay the 2gp and cross. Talk to the Dwarven Engineer. Ask if he has any schematics.

  15. Now you need to talk to Rolad again (at the Dwarven Mine northern entrance). Teleport if desired. Otherwise, walk west to get out of the cave.

  16. Once at the Dwarven Mine, talk to Rolad. Tell him that you'd better look for these as well. Read the Dwarven Lore book. You will get a message saying that there is a peculiar picture on the back. Tear out the page.

  17. Go into the Dwarven Mine. Head south west to the anvils. Use a gold bar with the anvil. Make a Golden Helmet (takes all 3 remaining bars). Leave the Mine.

  18. Head west to the pass under White Wolf Mountain. Look around for Khorvak, a dwarven engineer. Talk to him, ask what he wants to drink. Take a dwarven stout and use it with him. He will give you the Schematics.

  19. You should have 4 schematics pieces now. Click on them to assemble. You will have to put the pieces together manually. Click on the schematic you want to move in the lower right side of the screen and then use the arrow keys above to move it around. If you close the window while assembling them you will have to start over. Try to make the Schematics look like this:

    Once you get a messag saying that it all makes sense now, you have all of them in the right place.

  20. Continue through the pass then exit. Head south to Catherby or west to the Seers' Village to stop at a bank. Take whatever you will need for a battle, weapon armour, food, pots if desired, etc... The enemy's level will vary based on your combat level. (For me it was level 125 at combat level 92.) It attacks with magic, so you may want to use the Protect from Magic prayer. You will also need the Golden Helmet, Schematic, and a pickaxe. Try to keep some spaces empty, you will need to mine some gold. The more gold you take when you fight then enemy, the easier it will be.

  21. When you are ready go back to Dondakan the Dwarf. Equip the Golden Helmet and talk to Dondakan the Dwarf. Tell him to fire when ready. The cannon will be fired and you will end up inside the rock.

  22. Mine the gold rocks and Mineral Veins in the area, the more you mine the easier the fight will be. You will get messages from the enemy while you are mining. You have to try to mine the gold as fast as you can, the helm gets heavier and heavier as you go. There is an 8 minute time limit for being in the rock.

  23. Once you have enough gold, follow the tunnel to the large area with a Wall of Flame blocking the entrance. Jump through the Wall of Flame. You will get an animation showing the center of the area surrounded by a Wall of Flame.

  24. If you get into trouble, take off the Golden Helmet. You will be transported back outside the rock. All of the gold in your inventory will be absorbed back into the rock. You can go get more supplies or whatever you need. Once ready to go into the rock again, talk to Dondakan the Dwarf. Then mine more gold and head to the large area again.

  25. Prepare for battle and then right click on the Wall of Flame in the center of the area, talk to it. Arzinian Avatar of Magic will appear. If the fight does not begin, attack him. Once he is defeated you will be transported back outside the rock.

  26. Talk to Dondakan the Dwarf. You will be rewarded.

5000 Mining exp
5000 Smithing exp
Rune Pickaxe
ability to mine gold ore inside the rock

To mine inside the rock, wear the Golden Helmet and talk to Dondakan the Dwarf. To leave the rock take off the Golden Helmet.
