Varrockian literature tells of a valuable shield, stolen long ago from the museum of Varrock, by a gang of professional thieves. See if you can track down this shield and return it to the museum. You will need a friend to help you complete this quest.

NOTE: you must choose a gang to join, either the Black Arm Gang or the Pheonix Gang, for this quest. What you do during this quest is decided by which gang you choose... Also, the gang you choose for this quest decides which part you will do later on in the Hero's Quest for Members Runescape.
Black Arm Gang
Talk to Tramp, just south of the Sword Shop in Varrock. Ask him what's down the alley and then ask if he thinks they will let you join. He will tell you to talk to Katrine.
Go west then south to the door near the southern wall. Go through it and then next one.
Talk to Katrine. Say "I've heard you're in the Black Arm Gang." and then "I'd rather not reveal my sources.". Next Say "I want to become a member of your gang." and then "Well, people tell me I have an honest face.". She will ask you to steal 2 crossbow from the Pheonix Gang, agree to do it.
Get a key from your Pheonix Gang friend.
Once you have the key, go south to the southern entrance of Varrock, then turn east following the road. The road will branch to the south, just past the southen branch you will see two doors on the south side of the road. Go to the eastern door, there will be a ladder going up inside. Use the Key with the door, then go up the ladder. Try to take the Pheonix crossbows, the Weaponsmaster (level 23) will attack. Kill him, take 2 of the crossbows, and then leave the building.
Head west to the Black Arm Gang building, talk to Katrine. You will then be part of the gang.
Go through the northern door, then up the staircase. Search the cupboards. You should find the Broken Shield.
Step is Complete.

Pheonix Gang
Go to the castle in Varrock. Head to the library, in the northern end of the castle.
Talk to Reldo, tell him that you are in search of a quest. He will tell you to look for a book called 'The Shield of Arrav', it will have the details for a quest. Search the bookcases for the book. (NOTE: one of the bookcases may have a check option instead of search.)
Once you find the book, read it. Talk to Reldo again. He will tell you to talk to Baraek.
Leave the castle through the southern entrance, and head towards the fountain just outside the castle wall. Talk to Baraek, ask where you can find the Pheonix Gang. He will ask you for 20gp, give it to him.
Go south to the southern entrance of Varrock, then turn east following the road. The road will branch to the south, going between 2 buildings. Go into the building to the east, there will be a ladder going down, go down it.
Talk to Straven (level 23). Say "I know who you are!" and then "I'd like to offer my services.". He will ask you to kill Jonny the Beard.
Go back up the ladder and head west. When you get to the southern entrance of Varrock again, go into the building just north of the road. Attack Jonny the Beard (level 2), he will drop a scroll, take it.
Go back to the Pheonix Gang hideout. Talk to Straven, you will give him the scroll. He will give you the key to the Pheonix Gang weapon store. You are now part of the Pheonix gang.
Go through the door and the next one. Head to the south western most room, open and search the chest. You will get a Broken shield.
You will need to give your key to the player you are doing this quest with so they can get their half of the shield. You can get another key from Straven.
Step is Complete.

Both Gangs
Once each of you have you shield half, decide who is going to go to the king with them. The person decided on needs to take both halves of the shield to King Roald in the Varrock Castle.
King Roald will tell you to talk to the Curator of the museum to make sure the shield halves are authentic.
Head east to the museum (just north of the building with the training dummies). Talk to the Curator. He will give you 2 Certificates, one for you and one for your friend. He will also ask you to tell your friend to talk to him after they claim their reward so he can thank them. (The Curator does not always thank them.)
Give one Certificate to the player that helped you.
Both players take their Certificate to King Roald, he will reward you.
Alternate
There is an 'alternate' way to do the end of this quest. When you search the chest for the shield half, if you drop the Broken shield and search the chest again, you will get a second Broken shield. (NOTE: be sure to tell the other player to do the same thing.) This way you will each end up with both halves of the shield after you trade. Then both players will take the shield halves to King Roald, the museum Curator, etc... The extra Certificates can be dropped since you can only claim the reward once.
